What is mobile Broadband?
Mobile Broadband simply allows you to connect to the internet no matter where you are, wirelessly. Your connection is received through a 3G mobile network signal and thus you do not need any wires just a 3G USB wireless dongle to connect.
When you sign up to a mobile broadband service your new provider will send you a USB dongle or a data card which will allow you to receive wireless broadband on the move. The price of the dongle depends on your contract tariff or contract length but most are offered free of charge.
What are the costs?
Mobile broadband packages charge a monthly subscription for there service and this is usually based on your bandwidth allowance each month. Your bandwidth allowance is the amount of data you are allowed to send and receive in a given month.
If you go over your monthly allowance of data then you will be charged a rate for each MB over your limit so keep an eye on your usage as these charges can be expensive.
When choosing your mobile broadband package you will have three choices to choose from:
1) A Pay monthly ttariff - Starting at only £10 a month.
2) A Pay As You GO tariff - You only pay for what you use.
3) A Pay monthly tariff including a laptop computer - These tariffs are more expensive than standard pay monthly contracts but you also get a laptop computer with the deal.
The longer your contract the cheaper your monthly charge will generally be, so it may be better to choose a 24 or 18 month contract.
If you wish to use your mobile broadband abroad then it may be worth while paying a bit extra for this service otherwise you will be charged a small fortune for every MB you send or receive. Please note though that the charges for these tariffs can range from £45 - £110 a month, so are really only for business professionals who need the internet while out of the country.
Can I use my mobile broadband on different computers or laptops? - Yes you can, all you need to do is plug you mobile broadband dongle or modem into any laptop or computer.
What is the coverage like for mobile broadband? - Mobile broadband currently covers apout 99% of the UK. PLease note though that speeds and quality of your connection can vary.
Can I use mobile broadband whilst on a train or coach? - Yes, but your coverage and the speed of your connection can vary depending on the strength of the mobile signal you receive.
Can is use mobile broadband whilst abroad? - Yes, but it is not free, you will be charged per MB you send or receive as this can cost a small fortune. Some providers such as 3 have changed their policy when it comes to using your mobile broadband while abroad, you now need to contact them before you go to allow you to use the service, this stops you making a mistake and getting back home and getting a large bill through.
Are there any hidden cost? - There are only hidden cost if you use your mobile braodband abroad or you exceed you monthly bandwidth allowance (Usage Limit).
Is it difficult to setup? - No, all you have to do is simply connect your USM dongle or modem to your laptop or computer and you are set to surf the internet or read your emails.
